INTRODUCTION
The mandate of the Department of Music Education is to prepare music teachers for the pre-tertiary levels of education in Ghana. The Department seeks to train and equip students with relevant skills to teach musical arts in Ghanaian schools as well as train general musicians with appropriate skills to pursue the wide range of careers available.

Overview

The School is committed to ensuring that students strive for and maintain academic excellence in their various fields of specialization in the Arts. In addition, the School prepares students in the Arts as educators, as managers in the promotion of arts and culture and as artists and artistes who can exploit creative and innovative environments to generate new ideas. As a result students are equipped with broad and diverse general knowledge deemed essential for reflective professional artists and artistes. Accordingly, the School ensures efficient and valuable administrative support for the constituent academic departments. School of Creative Arts comprises four academic departments namely:

  • Department of Art Education

INTRODUCTION
The Department of Art Education offers a 4-year Bachelor of Art Education. The Department has eight Units: Ceramics, Sculpture, Graphic Design, Picture Making, Basketry, Jewellery, Leatherwork and Textiles. Students who are admitted into the department are equipped with relevant skills and knowledge to enable them teach art effectively and competently in the basic and second cycle institutions in Ghana.

  • Department of Graphic Design

The Department of Graphic Design provides opportunity for the study of an internationally recognized B. A. level programme in theory and practice of Graphic Design. It provides opportunity for producing a sustained body of creative graphic design work, and to develop appropriate research skills.

  • Department of Music Education

INTRODUCTION

  • Department of Theatre Arts

INTRODUCTION
The Department of Theatre Arts, UEW seeks to train and equip students with relevant skills in the fields of Theatre and Dance. It also equip teachers with knowledge and skills to teach theatre related subjects in Ghanaian schools. The Department is also poised to advance the accumulated knowledge and skills in Ghanaian traditional culture and the development of Ghanaian contemporary arts and culture.

Entry Requirements

  • SSSCE Candidates
  • Passes (A – D) in six (6) subjects comprising three core subjects, including English Language, Mathematics, Integrated Science OR Social Studies, plus

ii) Passes (A – D) in other three (3) elective subjects

A credit (D) in Music will be an advantage.

  • WASSCE Candidates
  • Credit Passes (A1–C6) in six (6) subjects comprising three core subjects, including English Language, Mathematics, Integrated Science OR Social Studies, plus
  • Credit Passes (A1–C6) in any three (3) elective subjects.

A credit in Music will be an advantage.

  • GCE Advanced Level Candidates

i)   Passes in three (3) subjects (at least, one of the passes should be Grade D or better).

ii) Also, the applicant must have had credit passes (Grade 6) in five GCE Ordinary Level subjects including English Language, Mathematics and a Science subject (for non-science students) and an Arts subject (for Science students).

  • Mature Candidates

Applicants must be at least 25 years by August 1 of the academic year s/he wants to enrol:

  • A General Aptitude Test and
  • A Subject Area Test.

Both administered by the University.

  • Candidates must possess a Diploma in a relevant subject area from the University of Education, Winneba or a recognised institution.
  • Diploma applicants from the Department of Music Education of UEW who obtain GPA of 2.5 and above will be admitted to Level 300.
