Bachelor of Arts in Sociology

Students pursuing the Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology can choose either a classic sociology major or a sociology major with a specialty track in community services, global structures, environmental social science, or law and justice.

The classic sociology major is designed for students who have a general interest in the field of sociology and who want to choose from a wider variety of sociology courses. It is also a good choice for students considering graduate school in sociology or a related discipline, and those nearing the end of their programs who need to complete their degree quickly. The sociology major with a specialty track is designed for students who want to focus their studies an area of particular interest.

Students who major in sociology must complete 34 semester hours of sociology courses. There are six required courses (SOC 100, SOC 301, SOC 302, SOC 303, SOC 304, SOC 495), and 21 of the 34 semester hours must be at the 300-level or above.  Students who major in Sociology have the option to pursue a series of informal tracks:

  • Community Service
  • Law and Justice
  • Environmental Social Science
  • Global Structures

Statistics for the Social Sciences

* Students are strongly encouraged to take SOC 301, 302, and 303 early in their program.

Sociology Electives
21 hours (15 for transfer students)

  • 6 hours in sociology at any level (0 hours for transfer students)
  • 12 hours in sociology at level 300 or above
  • 3 hours in sociology at level 400 or above
