The UAB softball team and head coach Marla Townsend announced its 2017 schedule on Monday, which features four Conference USA series being played at home.
“The UAB softball staff and the student-athletes take pride in playing one of the toughest schedules in the country and we’ve assembled a very competitive schedule this season,” head coach Marla Townsend said. “We are also very excited about hosting some of the country’s most elite teams at our newly renovated stadium this upcoming season and I can’t wait to see how we compete against those teams.”
UAB starts the season by participating in three tournaments in the month of February. The Blazers will travel to Honolulu, Hawaii Feb. 9-11 to participate in the Paradise Classic hosted by the University of Hawaii. The teams involved are UAB, Oregon State, Sacramento State, Boise State and Hawaii.
Southern Illinois, Siena, Boston and Villanova will join UAB in making the trip down to Madeira Beach, Fla., Feb. 17-19 to take part in the EMU Madeira Beach Spring Invitational.
The Blazers will return home to co-host the Magic City Classic with Samford Feb. 24-26 and will feature games against Indiana, Murray State, Iowa State and Samford.
UAB will play in two more tournaments over the course of the season. The Blazers will travel to Kennesaw, Ga., to participate in the Bailey Memorial Tournament at Kennesaw State on March 3-5. The Blazers will face UNC Greensboro, Dartmouth, Akron and Kennesaw State.
The final tournament of the season, the College Preview Tournament, will be March 25-26. UAB will face Mississippi State and Oklahoma at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium where the Women College World Series is played before the final game of the tournament shifts back to Norman, Okla., where UAB will face Oklahoma for the second time.
UAB will host 12 C-USA games, and four series, as Southern Miss, Louisiana Tech, North Texas and UTEP will all visit Birmingham, Ala.
Conference road series include UTSA, Western Kentucky, Middle Tennessee and Marshall. The C-USA Conference Tournament will begin on May 10-13 in Hattiesburg, Miss.
Non-conference games for the Blazers include trips to Jacksonville State, Troy, Chattanooga and Alabama.
There will be six mid-week non-conference home games for UAB as Alabama, Lipscomb, South Alabama, Jacksonville State, Samford and Washington all visit Mary Bowers Field.
The Blazers return several players, including eight seniors in Joanna Fallen, Madison Hir, Danii Fernandez, Lauren Beshel, Amy Waters, Mary Warren, Olivia Black and Cara Goodwin.
Head coach Marla Townsend begins her 18th season at the helm and led the Blazers to a 14-10 C-USA record and finished second in the conference tournament.
