Elbert and Panzie Purser Scholarship (Physician Assistant) – The Purser Scholarship was established in 1979 and subsequently endowed in 1983 through a gift from the Elbert. H. Purser Trust. Applicants must be admitted to or enrolled in the UAB Physician Assistant program and must be natives or permanent residents of the state of Alabama. Selection is made by a committee of the Physician Assistant program faculty; the number and amount of the annual awards are determined by the committee based upon the availability of funds.

Earl W. Hall Loan (Physician Assistant) – Seniors in the Physician Assistant Program with emergency financial needs are eligible to apply for this low-interest loan. Inquiries should be directed to the Director, Physician Assistant Program.

Henry L. Laws Scholarship Loan (Physician Assistant) – Students with financial need who are enrolled in or accepted for enrollment in the Physician Assistant Program may apply for this loan. Inquiries should be directed to the Director, Physician Assistant Program.

National Health Service (NHS) Corps –
The NHSC Loan Repayment program provides loan repayment assistance to licensed primary care medical, dental, and mental and behavioral health providers who serve in communities with limited access to health care. There are both full-time and half-time options for service commitment. The dollar amount of assistance and length of service depend on participation in either the full- or half-time and on the need on the Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA) score of the site.

In order to apply for the loan repayment program, you must

  • be licensed to practice in an NHSC-eligible discipline,
  • have a job at an NHSC-approved site, and
  • have unpaid, qualifying educational loans

Primary Care Physician Assistant (PA) are eligible to participate.

Indian Health Service

The mission of the Indian Health Service (IHS) is to raise the physical, mental, social and spiritual health of American Indians and Alaska Natives to the highest level.

The IHS LRP was created to support this mission by providing health professionals the financial freedom to fulfill their career goals. The IHS LRP awards up to $40,000 toward the repayment of qualified student loans in exchange for an initial two-year service commitment to practice full time at an Indian health program site.

By accepting an IHS LRP award, you will be joining our efforts to provide quality health care services to American Indian and Alaska Native communities. You will begin a career that serves a purpose and mission and will provide care to patients who truly need you.

Currently, there are over 250 PAs meeting the health care needs of American Indians and Alaska Natives in the world of IHS medicine. In IHS PAs are credentialed to work in Emergency and Family Practice Settings. Our PAs provide essential services in specialty clinics and programs, such as orthopedics, diabetes care, surgery, geriatric, pediatric, women’s health, hospitalist and community health. PAs offer continuity, comprehensiveness and coordination of care, all vital components to meeting patient need in the medical home.

Health Professions Scholarship Program (HPSP) –

HPSP covers 100% of the cost of medical school, dental school or qualifying postgraduate school tuition, plus offers a monthly stipend of $2,179 to cover living expenses for up to four years. Beyond that, medical school and dental school candidates can get a sign-on bonus of up to $20,000.

To qualify for Active Duty employment consideration as a Physician Assistant in the Navy Medical Service Corps, you must meet these basic requirements:

  • Be a U.S. citizen currently practicing in the U.S. (contact a

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
  • Completion of a physician assistant education program approved by the Committee on Allied Health Education and Accreditation (CAHEA)
  • Certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA)
  • Be willing to serve a minimum of three years of Active Duty
  • Be between the ages of 18 and 41
  • Be in good physical condition and pass a full medical examination
