At Alabama, champions are all around – in the classroom and on the field. Since 1944, our Manderson MBA program has been producing champions of the business world.
The Manderson experience is built on academic, teamwork, professional development, internship, networking and service opportunities.
With quality over quantity in mind, our classes are small. This offers an experience that is both richer and more personal than larger programs. The MBA at Manderson is a carefully, strategically crafted two-year program of study that incorporates core and concentration coursework. Our faculty and staff work with our students to ensure they are prepared to build a championship-caliber career.
In 1944, Dean Lee Bidgood recognized the need to expand graduate program offerings in Culverhouse, the school’s primary business schooling facility. Assessing the potential afforded by Culverhouse, he seized the opportunity to found an MBA program that was out of place at the time in the southeast—as well as ahead of its time.
Later that same year, three men and one woman became the first MBA recipients from The University of Alabama. The graduate school of business would continue to offer master, MBA and Ph.D. tracks until 1986, when the Executive MBA program was introduced by Dean H.H. Mitchell, Dr. Lonnie Strickland and MBA Director Gina Johnson.
In 1987, the newly named Culverhouse College of Commerce named its graduate division The Manderson Graduate School of Business in recognition of Lewis Manderson’s exemplary record, generosity and foresight, both as a businessman and a steadfast supporter of The University of Alabama and the business school.

Official GMAT or GRE Scores
The Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT) is preferred, but the MBA along with most Manderson programs will accept either the GMAT or the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). Applicants should take either exam, then request that scores be submitted electronically to The University of Alabama, which may be done immediately following the completion of the exam. We accept only official score reports from GMAC, ETS or Pearson VUE that are less than five years old. Official scores must be received before we can evaluate your application.
2016 Average GMAT 674 (range of 600+)
2016 Average GRE 306 (minimum 300)
Official Undergraduate Transcripts
For each institution of higher education (including community colleges) at which you have completed 15 or more credit hours, the Graduate School office requires an official transcript (either electronic or paper).
Please note that you do not need to submit University of Alabama transcripts.
Average Undergraduate GPA 3.57 (minimum 3.0)
Additional transcripts information can be found here.
Statement of Purpose Essay
What is a Statement of Purpose? Also called the statement of intent, this required Supporting Document is where you share your story of why an MBA from Alabama is the best fit for you. It is ideally two pages (1.5 or double spaced) on the following:
- What lead to your decision to pursue a Manderson MBA?
- Your potential contributions to Manderson & assets you will bring to the class

- Potential career aspirations

All applicants are required to secure three letters of recommendation. Ideally, one to two are academic (a professor in your major or relevant coursework) and one to two are supervisors, mentors or advisors.
Preferred submission: Applicants will submit contact information into the system, which will automatically email a request to the recommender. The person may then upload or type a recommendation and submit.
Alternate submission: A hardcopy may be mailed to MBA Admissions at Box 870223, Tuscaloosa, AL 35487.
International Applicant Requirements:
